<p>My third story is about death.</p>
<p>When I was , I read a quote that went something like: &#8220;If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you&#8217;ll most certainly be right.&#8221; It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: &#8220;If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?&#8221;</p>
<p>And whenever the answer has been &#8220;No&#8221; for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that I&#8217;ll be dead soon is the most important tool I&#8217;ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure &#8211; these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.</p>
<p>Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.</p>
<p>About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:00 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn&#8217;t even know what a pancreas was.</p>
<p>The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor&#8217;s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you&#8217;d have the next years to tell them in just a few months.</p>
<p>It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes. I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.</p>
<p>I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.</p>
<p>I had the surgery and thankfully I&#8217;m fine now.</p>
<p>This was the closest I&#8217;ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don&#8217;t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share.</p>
<p>No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life&#8217;s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.</p>
<p>Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.</p>
<p>Your time is limited, so don&#8217;t waste it living someone else&#8217;s life.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people&#8217;s thinking.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t let the noise of others&#8217; opinions drown out your own inner voice.</p>
<p>And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Your iPad allows you to run multiple apps in the background, so you can safely exit an app without losing your work, or without having to restart the game you&#8217;re playing. Your iPad will save the current state the app is in, before it quits. Some iPad apps even have continuous access to the Internet, so that it can continue downloading or receiving data, even while the app is in the background. Music apps can stream audio in the background, so you can enjoy some music while playing your favorite game or working.</p>
<h2>iPAD INSTRUCTIONS FOR MULTITASKING BAR</h2>
<p>To access other apps running in the background, you need to open your iPad&#8217;s multitasking bar. To do this just follow these iPad instructions&#8230;</p>
<p>1. Double-tap the iPad&#8217;s Home button. The screen will then more up slightly, and you&#8217;ll see a list of your most recent apps.</p>
<p>2. If the app you are looking for isn&#8217;t visible, swipe the multitasking bar to the left to reveal more apps.</p>
<p>3. Then simply tap whichever app you need, to launch it. You&#8217;ll see a shuffling transition effect, which shows you that the current iPad app is being tucked away in the background, bringing the app of your choice to the front.</p>
<p>The iPad multitasking bar is great, because it allows you to quickly switch between a bunch of apps that you&#8217;re currently working with. This way, you don&#8217;t have to go back and hunt for their icons on the home screen.</p>
<h2>QUITTING iPAD APPS</h2>
<p>To quit an app follow these iPad instructions&#8230;</p>
<p>1. Access the multitasking bar once more by double-tapping your iPad&#8217;s Home button.</p>
<p>2. Next, Tap and hold an app, until they all jiggle.</p>
<p>3. Then tap the minus sign icon, on the app you want to quit. This might look similar to when you&#8217;re deleting apps. But don&#8217;t worry, it doesn&#8217;t completely delete the app from your iPad, it just closes it from running in the background.</p>
<p>For the most part, you don&#8217;t need to even worry about closing apps on the multitasking bar. Because Your iPad will manage its memory, and only run what it can handle in the background. But, you may want to close an app if it&#8217;s giving you a problem, and you want to restart it by following the above iPad instructions.<br />

<p>If you&#8217;re not in the hurricane zone, you&#8217;ll still find these tips useful for those times when you need to reduce battery consumption and extend the time you have with a charged iPad.</p>
<p>1) Bookmark Now: Power outages are likely, and your iPad may be your connection to the outside world. Bookmark sites you may want to access during a power outage. Bookmarking them now will reduce the time, and battery drain, it will take to access them later.</p>

<p>2) Charge Up Now: Leave your iPad plugged in until the power goes out. Then you&#8217;ll have the maximum charge and battery life.</p>
<p>3) Adjust brightness: Lowering your screen brightness will help to extend your battery life. You can adjust brightness by going to Settings &gt; Brightness &amp; Wallpaper and drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.</p>
<p>4) Connection Options: Have both 3G cellular and Wifi turned on (if you have both options). If you lose power, you&#8217;ll lose your home Wifi connection through your wireless router. Depending on the severity of your local outage, you may also lose cellular service.</p>
<p>5) Temporarily Disconnect: After turning both connection options on in your settings, switch on &#8220;Airplane Mode&#8221;. This will keep your iPad from connecting out (and using power) when you&#8217;re not using it. Whenever you want to connect back out, just switch airplane mode off.</p>
<p>6) Minimize use of location services: Applications that actively use location services, such as Maps, may reduce battery life. To disable location services, go to Settings &gt; Location Services. (If you haven&#8217;t updated your iPad in a while, Location Services may be listed under Settings &gt; General &gt; Location Services.)</p>
<p>7) Turn off push notifications: Some applications use the Push Notification service to alert you of new data. Applications that rely extensively on push notifications (such as instant messaging applications) may decrease battery life. To disable push notifications, go to Settings &gt; Notifications and set Notifications to Off. Note that this does not prevent new data from being received when the application is opened. Also, the Notifications setting will not be visible if you do not have any applications installed that support push notifications.</p>
<p>8 ) Fetch new data less frequently: Applications such as Mail can be set to fetch data wirelessly at specific intervals. The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To fetch new data manually, go to Settings &gt; Mail, Contacts, Calendars &gt; Fetch New Data and tap Manually. Also turn &#8220;Push&#8221; off.</p>
<p>9) Turn Off Your iPad Screen: Turn off your iPad screen when you aren&#8217;t using it for a while. To &#8220;lock&#8221; your iPad, and turn off the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button. You can also set the Auto-Lock interval so your iPad will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set Auto-Lock, go to Settings &gt; General &gt; Auto-Lock and set the interval to a short time, like 2 minutes.</p>
<p>10) Power Off: Leave your iPad completely powered off to really persevere your battery life. To completely power off, hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a several seconds. Then slide the &#8220;Power Off&#8221; slider. This will turn off your iPad completely. Turn it back on by holding the Sleep/Wake button for several seconds. It will take a minute to come back on.</p>
<p>11) Entertainment: Resist the temptation to entertain yourself, or your children, with your iPad. Power outages from the hurricane may last days. You&#8217;ll want to keep your iPad available for communicating to the outside world and keeping up to date.</p>
<p>12) After your power comes back, review these tips, and decide which options to switch back on.</p>

What problems would I have buying an iPad to from the US and using it in the UK? Would the App Store still work the same? Would I need a different charger?</p>

I live here in Thailand, and I simply purchased an iPad on eBay from the U.S. and it was delivered here in three days. I can see no limitation, or even special consideration, required for having an iPad from the U.S.A. in the UK. The current is the same here as in the UK, and I charge my iPad via an iPhone wall charger, from my wall USB hub or, of course, straight USB connector into the computer. I have noticed, though, that my iPhone charging cables with USB do not seem to work as well as the official USB cables, especially if I am buying a non-Apple USB charging cable. They still work, however, but for one cable at least, I have to turn off the iPad for it to charge up &#8211; but it&#8217;s okay for over-night charging.<br />
I use the U.S. app store, but I see that I could choose the UK (or any other) store if I wanted to (and had an account in those places). I have absolutely no problems with the app store, or the update badges (on the app store icon) or with the updates themselves.<br />
